Operable walls are a type of temporary folding partition wall which serves to partition rooms in lieu of
permanent walls. They are able to be joined in sections, or as a single unit, depending upon how they are
manufactured. When not in use, they can be stored in pockets to provide a zero footprint solution for the
most flexibility and efficient use of space.
Movable Wall Panels
Movable wall panels are rectangular panels, that, when joined together, form a sound dampening wall
dividing a room into multiple spaces. The construction of the folding panels consists of a frame, panel face,
insulation, astragals, top seals, bottom seals, and other miscellaneous hardware.
The finish of the operable walls can be customized to suit the customer's needs. We can apply the same wallpaper
as the room to provide a seamless match when the wall is in use. We can install markerboard on the operable
wall face to provide a workspace in classroom environments. We can install wood veneer, cloth, vinyl, tackboard,
and more. There really is no end to the possibilities.
Movable Wall Track
The overhead operable wall track provides the running surface for the trolleys and panels to travel across when
setting up the wall to divide a room and when the putting the wall away in the pocket. Track construction consists
of steel, aluminum, or extruded aluminum. The weight of the wall can be in the tens of thousands of pounds, so
deflection calculations and track composition are essential for proper and safe usage. The track is usually attached to
steel support to provide the minimum deflection for the wall.
Movable Wall Trolleys
Operable wall trolleys are a set of wheels attached to the movable wall panels that run along the track to
provide a smooth transition from one place to another. These trolleys can be straight or multi-directional
to provide flexibility in room configuration and pocket storage.
Movable Wall Sound Dampening
Operable walls not only provide the means of dividing a room into multiple spaces, but also assist in limiting
the sound that transfers from one side to the other. The parts of the panel that help to limit the sound are
the panel face material, the insulation inside the panel, the astragals that provide the vertical seal from
one panel to the next, the bulb seals that join the ends of the movable wall to the fixed wall or pocket, and
the horizontal top and bottom seals. Horizontal top and bottom seals can be fixed, manual operable, or
automatic operable. All of these parts of the operable wall panels provide a wall's STC or Sound Transmission
Class. The STC is a numerical value that is used to rate how well the panel does at limiting sound transfer
from one side of the wall to the other.
